In March, Netflix holds onto its unofficial claim as the best platform for new comedy specials. First up is comedy icon Chris Rock taking the stage in Baltimore, Maryland for the first-ever Netflix live streamed global event, Chris Rock: Selective Outrage. If I had to guess, the title of this special might be a reference to the discourse that erupted from “The Slap Heard Around the World” at the Oscars last year. (Slapgate lives on in Gen Z memes to this day.) The comedian has previously said that he wouldn’t speak on The Slap until he gets paid to do so—and it looks like Netflix will be the one to send him that check. The show will stream live on March 4 at 10 p.m. ET.
In other comedy news, Mae Martin makes their hour-long comedy special debut with SAP, directed by Broad City and A League of Their Own comedic genius Abbi Jacobson. Martin is best known for writing and starring in Feel Good, which you can watch on Netflix to pre-game their new special. Martin has been a favorite amongst queer comics for years now, and I can only hope that their mainstream stardom is inevitable.
And if you aren’t a stand-up fan, there’s still plenty to look forward to on Netflix in March. For a romp that is sure to be played in the background of many a social gathering, check out Murder Mystery 2. This Netflix original sequel picks back up with Nick and Audrey Spitz (Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston) who, four years after solving their first murder mystery, are now full-time detectives struggling to get their private-eye agency off the ground. When they’re invited to celebrate the wedding of their friend the Maharaja (Adeel Akhtar) on his private island, they’ll finally get a stab at the high-stakes case they’ve been waiting for. It’s like Glass Onion meets Adam Sandler, and I’m not complaining about it.
For a darker watch, consider Waco: American Apocalypse, a three-part Netflix documentary series is the definitive account of what happened in Waco, Texas in 1993 when cult leader David Koresh faced off against the federal government in a bloody 51-day siege. Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that this month also brings us the second part of season four of You, the hit Penn-Badgley-is-a-sexy-stalker-serial-killer vehicle. All I can say about You is that it is inexplicably addicting. Here’s everything coming to and leaving Netflix in March 2023.
