Description

Harper’s Weekly — July 4, 1914

Founded by Fletcher Harper in New York City and first issued on January 3, 1857, Harper’s Weekly: A Journal of Civilization became the most widely read journal in the United States during the Civil War era. Published every Saturday by Harper & Brothers, the magazine carried foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays, and humor, but it built its reputation on illustration, employing artists such as Winslow Homer, Theodore R. Davis, and the brothers Alfred and William Waud. From 1862 onward, the political cartoonist Thomas Nast worked for the Weekly for more than two decades; his version of Santa Claus and his use of the elephant as the symbol of the Republican Party were both first popularized in its pages. The magazine published its final issue on May 13, 1916, and was absorbed by The Independent.
